The American system of self-government, as imperfect as it is, is the product of centuries of struggle and social evolution. Yes, it still needs improvement, but compared to other systems (such as rule by a military despot or a single, unelected party) it is vastly superior–if for no other reason than that it is answerable to the people at the ballot box. The people have chosen to be governed as they are. And they have clearly chosen to use government as an instrument for the common good, whether by protecting the environment, building roads and highways, ensuring that children do not go hungry, ensuring safe air travel, and so on. There will always be debate about how much government should do. But in a democracy, government represents the collective will of the people. It is not some alien force “out there.”
