Science: Astronomy
A joint project of ten countries, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) radio telescope system becomes operational. With thousands of antennas spread out all over the world, it simulates a single gigantic radio telescope with a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometer. The data collected requires communication links with a capacity greater than total global Internet traffic of 2014, which is processed by high-performance central computing centers.
Its capabilities include the ability to map a billion galaxies to the edge of the observable Universe, test the limits of general relativity using pulsars as gravity wave detectors, and even potentially detect extraterrestrial life–either via direct radio signal or amino acid signatures in spectral lines at specific frequencies.
